A Small Saving Grace
Set in Tucson, Arizona, A Small Saving Grace is a literary suspense novel with wry sensibilities, offbeat characters, and just enough menace to make the reader wince and say, “No, don’t go there.”
Andy, an English teacher and young mother, is left with a life-threatening brain injury after a vicious rape in a downtown parking garage. Following Andy’s release from the hospital, her divorced parents, Karen, an alcoholic, and Henry, a man out of the closet thirty years too late, form a shaky, sometimes contentious, partnership to care for their semi-comatose daughter. They decide to bring Andy home where she can be with her children, 6-year-old Hank, who loves everyone unconditionally, and Sadie, an angst-ridden 10-year-old longing to be thin and 16.
Henry, Karen and Andy have help from Michelle, a private-duty nurse who was awarded the Silver Star in Afghanistan when she was still Michael. Also on hand is Henry’s partner, Chas, and Sister Mary Ann, the chaplin at St. Mary’s Hospital where Andy first receives treatment. The nun provides advice and solace to the grieving family, while butting heads with the staid, male hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church.
Life is in turmoil, yet against the odds, Andy and those who love her, make slow but steady progress towards healing.
All the while, Andy’s attacker is stalking the entire household, searching for the right opportunity to kill his only living witness before she regains her ability to communicate.
